Doug Smith
2013 Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Doug Smith, a legendary coach at East Gaston High School, built one of the most successful wrestling programs in the region. From 1978 to 1991, his teams dominated the mat, winning multiple conference titles and state championships. Smith’s Warriors were so respected that they left competitors in awe, as other teams would stop in silence when they walked by. Under Smith’s leadership, East Gaston won more than 30 tournaments, and his teams went undefeated in conference matches multiple times, including a perfect 20-0 season in 1990-91.
Smith’s influence extended beyond victories, shaping his athletes into champions both on and off the mat.
After retiring from coaching in 1991 and teaching in 1998, he transitioned to owning Awards Express in Charlotte, where he continues to work. He and his wife, Toni, have three children, and Smith remains a passionate supporter of sports, even coaching his youngest in t-ball. Smith is proud to now be a part of the Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact on the community.
