Eddie Wilson

2014 Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

Eddie Wilson is a cornerstone figure in Mount Holly's sports history, both for his athletic achievements and his vital role in founding the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame, where he has served as president, treasurer, and secretary. His own induction into the Hall was a surprise, as he had been a key member of the nominating committee, but his peers insisted on recognizing him for his contributions on and off the field. Only charter member of the committee, a labor of giving back what this community has given me.

Wilson’s athletic career is anchored in his role as a leader on the 1967 Mount Holly High School football team, which won the Western state championship with a 26-20 victory over Glen Alpine. He was the heart of that team, known for his leadership and his ability to motivate his teammates. Total points scored in a season 124. This record set an all-time record of points scored in Mt. Holly High Football, earning the title of the Little Six conference back of the year.

A versatile athlete, Wilson also excelled in baseball, playing three years of high school ball and two years with Belmont Post 144 Legion. He received scholarship offers for both football and baseball but chose to pursue football at Western Carolina University, where he walked on and played freshman ball. Although he eventually returned home to Mount Holly, where he and his high school sweetheart, Sheila, married in 1970, Wilson’s drive and determination remained steadfast throughout his life. Eddie is a well-respected member of the Mount Holly community, known for his dedication to youth sports, local recreation, and his long-standing service to the city.

Over the years, he has served as a coach in youth baseball, football, and soccer, making a significant impact on countless young athletes. He played a pivotal role in getting the Mount Holly youth baseball teams sanctioned by the Greater Bambino Division Little League and served as Commissioner when the city hosted the state championship tournament, helping to elevate the local sports scene.

In addition to his involvement in youth sports, Eddie has been an active member of the Mount Holly Parks & Recreation Commission, even serving as Chairman. His contributions have helped to shape the city's recreational programs and ensure that they remain a vital part of the community.

After retiring from Duke Energy, where he worked as a Human Resources Manager, [Name] continues to be a dedicated leader in the community. He has been married to his wife, Sheila, for 55 years, and together, they have a son, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Michelle, along with two grandchildren, Dillon and Delani Wilson. His family remains a central part of his life, and he takes great pride in seeing the next generation of Wilson's carry on the values of hard work, community, and service.
