Eddie Wilson

2014 Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

Eddie Wilson is a cornerstone figure in Mount Holly's sports history, both for his athletic achievements and his vital role in founding the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame, where he has served as president, treasurer, and secretary. His own induction into the Hall was a surprise, as he had been a key member of the nominating committee, but his peers insisted on recognizing him for his contributions on and off the field.

Wilson’s athletic career is anchored in his role as a leader on the 1967 Mount Holly High School football team, which won the Western state championship with a 26-20 victory over Glen Alpine. He was the heart of that team, known for his leadership and his ability to motivate his teammates. Wilson set a record for points scored in a season—118—leading all scorers in Gaston County and earning the title of Gaston County Football Back of the Year. He was named MVP of the state championship game, where his dedication and work ethic helped propel the team to victory.

A versatile athlete, Wilson also excelled in baseball, playing three years of high school ball and two years with Belmont Post 144 Legion. He received scholarship offers for both football and baseball but chose to pursue football at Western Carolina University, where he walked on and played freshman ball. Although he eventually returned home to Mount Holly, where he and his high school sweetheart, Sheila, married in 1970, Wilson’s drive and determination remained steadfast throughout his life.
