James Ford
2017 Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
James Ford is a record-setting sprinter and hurdler whose determination and work ethic have earned him a place in the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame. Growing up in Mount Holly, Ford’s high school track team faced significant challenges, practicing in parking lots and on borrowed yardage. Despite this adversity, Ford excelled, winning numerous sprint and hurdles titles and earning recruiting letters from 46 colleges across the country.
Ford’s talent led him to High Point University, where he broke the 200-meter school record, was named Conference Athlete of the Year, and ranked in the top 15 nationwide in the 100 meters. After transferring to Western Carolina University, he helped build a successful track program, setting a school record with his 4x200-meter relay team.
Beyond athletics, Ford has had a long and impactful career in Mecklenburg County, working in education and social services for over 30 years. He was licensed and ordained as a minister in 1990 and became the pastor of Morningside Missionary Church in 2000. Ford also serves as a coach at Gaston Christian, guiding hurdlers and sprinters.
James’ dedication to his faith, family, and community is widely admired. He is known for his perseverance and impact, both on and off the track. Ford and his wife, Elaine, are proud parents of their daughter Abigail, a budding track star herself. Although his competitive running days are behind him, Ford’s legacy lives on through his coaching, his community service, and his unwavering commitment to living out his faith.
