Tyler Berg
2019 Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Tyler Berg is a proud Mount Holly native whose basketball journey from East Gaston High School to Wofford College has earned him a spot in the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame. A towering presence on the court, standing 6'9" and weighing 240 pounds, Berg’s dedication and skill set him apart from a young age. He began playing basketball in recreational league at just 6 or 7 years old and quickly rose to prominence at East Gaston, where he was named Gaston Gazette Player of the Year, Charlotte Observer Gaston-area Player of the Year, and Big South Conference Player of the Year during his high school career.
Berg’s talent extended beyond high school, as he became a key player for the Charlotte Royals AAU team, winning national championships and further honing his skills. After receiving numerous college scholarship offers, Berg chose Wofford College, where he played as a starting center and earned Southern Conference All-Freshman honors. Throughout his college career, he racked up 1,025 points in 108 games and became a mainstay in the starting lineup.
Today, Berg works in finance for Foodbuy LLC in Charlotte, but his roots in basketball remain strong. His greatest accomplishment, he says, is earning a full scholarship to play college basketball—a dream he set for himself and achieved. Tyler and his wife, Susan, are proud pet parents to two dogs named Brady and Basil. For Berg, being inducted into the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame is an honor, one that commemorates not just his talent on the court but his dedication to the sport and the community that raised him.
